CHEMICAL PEELS

This type of treatment is designed to resurface damaged or aging skin with the use of specific chemicals applied to the skin by your aesthetic provider. The goal, with chemical peels, is for skin to ultimately feel and appear smoother and more even-colored in appearance. Chemical peels are quick and affordable options for improving skin.

At your appointment your skin is first cleansed and prepared; your aesthetic provider will then apply one or more layers of the customized peel solution to your skin, monitoring it continually for the depth of penetration until the desired endpoint is reached. Afterward, the skin does not usually begin to show any changes for one or two days, after which one can generally expect a period of two or more days of flaking or peeling skin as the outer layers slough away gently.

The post-peel recovery period and ultimate results can vary a great deal depending on several factors:  the type of acidic solution, the desired depth of penetration into the skin, the number of layers applied, the amount of recovery time needed for actual peeling, and of course the unique characteristics of the individual’s skin. Some peels result in very little flaking while most do bring actual visible peeling. Your aesthetic provider can tell you more specifically about what to expect and how to care for your skin until flaking is resolved and your skin is smooth and clear.

We offer the following peels:

Light: BetaLift Peel - This treatment combines salicylic acid and retinol in a two-step exfoliating peel and anti-aging procedure. The versatility of this peel makes it ideal for use on acne-prone skin. Can be used in conjunction with an acne treatment regiment to help improve the appearance of oily, acne-prone skin.

Light-Medium: Skin Medica Vitilize Peel - Ideal for patients with mild-to-moderate skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scarring, uneven skin tone and texture.

Medium: VI Peel - A powerful, medical-grade peel that successfully treats acne, acne scarring, fine wrinkles, age and sun spots, hyperpigmentation, melasma, rosacea, enlarged pores, and promotes overall skin health.

Medium-Deep: VI Peel with Precision Plus - This peel has all the same wonderful benefits the original VI peel has, but a much stronger formulation used to fight discoloration. This peel is perfect for sun spots, age spots, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. The precision plus peel suppresses melanin, and brightens with kojic acid, vitamin c, and hydroquinone. This blend of acids is a powerhouse for overall complexion clarity. This peel is recommended in a series for best results.

Deep:  ZO 3 Step Peel - This anti-aging peel contains a blend of salicylic, lactic, and trichloracetic acid (TCA) in combination with retinol cream, all of which causes peeling/ flaking of the damaged outer layer of skin. This peel addresses different layers within the skin to promote the turnover of cells and stimulate the production of collagen. This peel is ideal for anti-aging, acne, stubborn pigmentation, melasma and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. This is one of our strongest peels for anti-aging and collagen stimulation.

Deep: Skinceuticals TCA Peel - The Skinceuticals TCA Peel is formulated with 15% TCA and 3% glycolic acid to improve the look of moderate to advancing fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. Complimentary with your TCA peel, we offer a Trifecta Mask Series. Mask series includes a rejuvenating mask, cooling mask, and hydrating mask.

CHEMICAL PEEL Q&A

Q: What are the benefits of a chemical peel?

A: Chemical peels are good options for improving skin tone/ decreasing pigment irregularities and for gradually bringing about improvements in skin texture as well. In addition, chemical peels can be quite helpful in improving and/or controlling acne, depending upon the particular situation.

Q: How do I choose which chemical peel I should get?

A: The most appropriate choice between varying chemical peels is best determined in consultation beforehand with your provider. Your provider will consider your medical and skincare history, examine your skin, talk with you about your goals, and discuss the anticipated outcomes of the various peels under consideration.

Q: Will my skin flake off a lot/how long will flaking last?

A: The degree of sloughing of the skin and how long that process lasts depends upon the type of chemical in the peel solution, the number of layers applied, the characteristics of the skin, among other factors. Your provider will be able to give you a better idea of what most people can expect with treatment similar to the type you are going to undergo. Light to medium depth peels, you'll typically peel for 3-5 days. For deeper peels, expect peeling for 7-10 days.

Q: Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?

A: With most chemical peels, makeup can be applied soon after without compromising the results or adding any risk of infection. However, quite often makeup simply won’t look smooth or appealing as it will tend to lift with the sloughing skin and give an uneven or unnatural appearance. Your provider can guide you more specifically about this according to the anticipated treatment.

Q: Are there special precautions I need to take before or after a chemical peel?

A: It’s important that a chemical peel not be performed on compromised skin; that is, skin that is broken, infected or inflamed, sunburned, etc. Please disclose information about such conditions to your provider before any chemical peel is undertaken. Afterward, the skin needs to be treated gently and allowed to lift or flake naturally; it is extremely important to avoid picking or pulling at the flaking or peeling skin. It’s also important to protect it from sun exposure carefully during this period. In some cases, you may be advised to postpone workouts or vigorous activity for a few days.

Q: What kind of discomfort should be anticipated?

A: Depending on what peel you get, will depend on the level of "spiciness". Discomfort typically only last a few minutes. In order to improve our patients’ experience, we have a Zimmer Cooler machines to cool down the skin and reduce pain associated with skin treatments. Known as Cryo Therapy, this allows for increased patient comfort. The Zimmer Cooler is unique in that it can cool the skin before, during and after treatment.

All chemical peels are performed under direct supervision of TOC Eye and Face Physicians.
